The Origin of Late Roman Period–Post-Migration Period Lithuanian Horses

In this paper, we present the 87Sr/86Sr data of 13 samples from horses six Lithuanian burial sites dating 3rd to 7th C AD. Alongside these data, also publish bioavailable 15 archaeological sites, based on 41 animals which enabled construction a reliable baseline for Southeast Baltic area. The values partially confirmed hypothesis that unusually large found in Late Roman Period Post-Migration burials are non-local origin. Of three identified, two were among largest specimens. However, overlap across different European regions does not permit us establish whether originated other areas Lithuania or more distant regions. With regards place origin could be Southern Sweden. This encourages discussions possible directions migration and compels rethink current models posit South Central Europe as main sources migration. results 87Sr/86Sr, δ13C, δ15N analyses demonstrate buried same cemetery had mobility feeding patterns.
